Visit Taos Pueblo New Mexico USA | #InfiniteWanderlust

Taos Pueblo is a living Native American - Pueblo Indians - settlement located in Northern New Mexico of United States.

The multi-storied adobe buildings have been continuously inhabited for over 1000 years. This settlement - consisting of dwellings and ceremonial buildings - is in the valley of Rio Grande tributary at the base of Sangre de Cristo Mountain range.

Taos Pueblo is a National Historic Landmark and a UNESCO Heritage Site. According to UNESCO “Taos Pueblo is a remarkable example of a traditional type of architectural ensemble from the pre-Hispanic period of the Americas unique to this region. One which, because of the living culture of its community, has successfully retained most of its traditional forms up to the present day.”

Taos Pueblo is the largest of these Pueblos that still exist, with some dwellings as high as five storeys.  Adobe is regularly maintained by the tribal members through re-plastering.

Taos Indians still cook with traditional outdoor ovens known as Horno ovens.

There is a chapel - St. Jerome’s Chapel - which was rebuilt by the Taos Indians in the 17th century. You can still see the remains of the old Chapel which was destroyed 12 years earlier during a revolt at the Pueblo.

Blue Lake, inside the settlement, is a sacred site for Pueblo Indians. It is considered the place of origin of the Pueblo and is accessible only to tribal members. A stream which is a tributary of Blue Lake flows through the Pueblo.

Taos Pueblo attracts  attracts large numbers of visitors every year. The Pueblo is 3 miles northeast of Taos town.

Once you are in the Pueblo please respect the "restricted area" signs as they protect the privacy of the residents. Areas open to visitors are marked as such. Photography is allowed but regulations apply. Don't attempt to take photos of tribal members without permission.
